Heteronormativity is the body of lifestyle norms that hold that people fall into distinct and complementary genders with natural roles in life. It presumes that heterosexuality is the normal sexual orientation, and states that sexual and marital relations are most fitting between a man and a woman.

It is actually pretty bad for those inside it for many reasons as well. These have been particularly brought home to me in my work as a sexual and relationship therapist.
